About

Esty Shushan, born in 1977, is a mother of four children and the eldest sister in a family of 12 children. She is the founder of the protest movement "No Voice, No Vote" and the CEO of the "Nivcharot" movement, which aims to promote the representation of Haredi women. Esty is a lecturer, filmmaker, media professional, artist, and content developer. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Open University. In recent years, Esty has lectured in Israel and abroad at universities, educational institutions, organizations, and various events, including TEDx Jerusalem, where she shared her personal story and activist activities. She creates and hosts the podcast "Spoken Haredi," which focuses on renewed Israeli Haredi culture. In 2014, her short film "Akara," which deals with early motherhood and large families, was released and screened at festivals in Israel and abroad. In 2020, she created the documentary film "Echad Mi Yodea" for HOT 8 as part of the "Ma Nishtana" project, which focused on Passover during the Corona days. Esty received the Yaari Prize in 2017 for social activism and the Rappaport Prize in 2019 for groundbreaking women's activism that brings change to Israeli society. In 2018, she was selected as one of the 20 most influential activists in Israel by Lady Globes magazine, and in 2020, she was named one of the 20 promising Israelis of the next decade by Yedioth Ahronoth. In September 2021, the documentary film "Eshet Chayil" by Anna Somershaf, based on Esty's life and public activities, premiered at the Jerusalem Film Festival. The film was screened at additional festivals in Israel and abroad and on HOT 8. In December 2021, Esty's first poetry book, "Zemeret Karnei HaOr HaMitnatzpot," was published by Tangier Publishing, edited by Roy Hassan. The book won the Ministry of Culture and Sport's debut literary prize. In 2022, Esty filmed her first feature film, a drama starring Mashi Kleinstein, Uri Levy, Miki Leon, Yishai Golan, and Raymond Amsalem, with original music by Dudu Tasa. The rough cut of the film was presented at the Tallinn Festival in November 2022. The film, produced by Metro Communications with the support of the Rabinovich Foundation, Gesher Foundation, and Keshet, is currently being distributed to festivals worldwide. In 2024, Esty was selected as a fellow in the Mandel Leadership in Culture program and serves on the board of directors at the Open University.
